NEW FOR 2021! This cold hardy butterhead has medium green leaves with a soft texture and excellent flavor. Adapted to short-day growing periods, and may be September sown for midwinter harvest, or October planted for harvest in March and April. Some protection from the elements in winter will improve quality and endurance, but I’m told it will overwinter in the open field in eastern Pennsylvania where it originated as an Amish selection. The method for this is late (October) direct sowing, with no thinning until March, when seedlings are properly spaced and weeded. The survival of this heirloom to the present can be credited to Mary Schultz, the ardent lettuce collector from Monroe, WA, who (notably) also saved ‘Mescher’ butter lettuce, to our great benefit.
