A gem of a dense little green romaine, and therefore its name. One of the most pleasant and productive lettuces ever grown, selected for close spacing and intensive 6" x 6" greenhouse production in an English climate. This is the prototype for the compact “mini-head” types that have lately become so popular in the market. I think of this as a new class of lettuce in itself, and have begun to name my kinds that fit this class “gems” in honor of the ideotype variety.
