Celosia argentea cristata Annual members of the Amaranth family, native to the southern hemisphere where they plague farmers as weeds. The ornamental kinds are placed in their own subspecies (cristata), which is further divided into groups of flower types-- Cristata (cockscombs), Plumosa (feathery plumes), and Spicata (wheat or spiked plumes).
