Eryngium planum This is a cosmopolitan genus of many perennial species found all over the world. Despite a thistlish appearance, the genus is in the Apiaceae. It is generally adapted to poor dry soil conditions. Eryngium planum is among the smaller species, reaching 40” in the first year, up to 48” in later years. Spacing should be 18-24” apart. Do not overwater. Plants are long lived, but are commonly replaced after years 3 or 5. Germination is in 7-10 days with temps of 68-72. Press into soil surface, keeping medium moist but not wet. Dormancy is common and normal, so it is best sown in open flats, allowing seedlings to be pricked out as they appear after the first flush. Common names are eryngo and sea holly.
